Processing XML documents in multi-user database management environments requires a suitable storage model of XML data, provision of typical XML APIs (like SAX, DOM, or XQuery) supported by tailored index structures, and concurrency control mechanisms adapted to the XML data model. To obtain significant research results in these areas from a really running system we started the implementation of our native XML database management prototype system XML Transaction Coordinator (XTC).
