This project is carried out in cooperation with the department for technical testing of Keiper-Recaro GmbH & Co., a leading manufacturer of vehicle seats. We are currently designing a prototypical integrated information system, meeting operational requirements of technical applications. The system will be primarily employed to maintain and provide information about earlier projects and test suites, in order to support the exact and complete preparation of future projects in an optimum fashion. Moreover, RITA should steadily integrate relevant data on new projects into the already existing knowledge pool. By constructing such a system, a far-reaching information exchange among the experts involved shall be warranted, thus rendering development times shorter, achievement of goals more secure, as well as development efforts less costly. Another important endeavor for information systems of this kind is their seamless integration into already existing flows of work and decision processes. RITA is intended to support the experts in their decisions, it should not, however, replace them.

Besides the challenge to model data and operations in a single coherent database schema, directing and controlling activities in the scope of development projects is another major issue. To this end, workflow concepts suitable for long-duration processes in heterogeneous environments are of particular interest. The major tasks are coordinating activities and monitoring their consistency. Moreover, client/server models comprising advanced transaction models constitute another important milestone in the quest for such a system.
