News (Plan for Summer Semester 2015)

This lecture is being offered again in Summer Semester 2015 by Prof. Sebastian Michel. Please find the new website of this lecture (and Prof. Michel's group) under: dbis.informatik.uni-kl.de/index.php/en/teaching/summer-2015/distributed-data-management

This guest lecture was held by Sebastian Michel (Saarland University) in the summer semester 2013. It can be placed in the topic area "Information Systems" of both the "Information and Communication Systems" specialization of the Master in Computer Science and the "Information Management" specialization of the Master in Applied Computer Science. The teaching language is english. Additional information is availble in the KIS and the module handbook of the Computer Science Department.

This course addresses fundamental concepts of distributed data management. Emphasis is put on novel approaches/paradigms to managing Big Data. The course aims at a mixture of system issues and hands on experience (like Hadoop/HDFS) and on fundamental algorithms and techniques (such as consistent hashing or Bloom filters).

  • Big Data
  • MapReduce (Hadoop, HDFS, …)
  • Various algorithms on top of MR (such as PageRank)
  • NoSQL Stores
  • (Eventual) Consistency Models
  • Synopses: Bloomfilter, count-min sketch, KMV, ...
  • Distributed Data Stream Processing: STREAM, Storm, ...
  • Peer-to-Peer Data Management: Gossip protocols, consistent hashing
